Crashes when set to GPU

Currently setting Cycles to GPU makes 3ds Max 2019 & 2018 to crash to desktop, single or multiple GPU. This happens in every scene I try. CPU works fine.

Usually, I have found GPU to be very stable and bug-free. The last render I did without this problem was on the 5th of January but I can’t remember if I updated my nVidia drivers since or which Cycles version I was using at that time.

How exactly is it crashing? By that I mean, does it make crash Max completely, or does it just hang forever while the render is still in progress and nothing shows up?

Either way, I'll start working on putting together a special build for you that will do some extra logging which should hopefully help me figure out exactly where the crash is happening, but it will probably take me a few days to get it ready. I'll you know once I have this done.

In the meantime you might want to try reinstalling your nvidia drivers with the "Perform a clean installation" box checked in the installer. This will reset all your local driver settings in case there is any of your driver configuration that got corrupted at some point. I expect that probably won't help, but it might.

It makes 3ds Max close and displays the Error Report.

Did the clean installation of the latest nvidia driver (419.17), rebooted the computer - unfortunately, the same issue happens. Using (CyclesRenderInstall_2017-2019_Beta_02_03.exe)

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll get back to you in a few days with a special debug version that will log a bunch of information as it runs. Hopefully that will give me the info I need to find what is going wrong.

Hey, just a quick update here so you don't think I've forgotten about this.

My initial plan was to send you a build that had my bad hacky logging system enabled, but I've opted instead to rewrite the logging system entirely in a way that will let me ship it in all future versions as an option so I don't need to keep making a custom build when someone reports a problem like this. This is taking a bit longer than I had expected but I think it is the best option long-term.

Now my plan is to have this ready by Monday, I'll send you an email with a link to the installer once it is prepared.

Great, thanks.

I've just sent you an email with details about the special plugin build. You may need to check your spam folder as some spam filters don't like emails with links to exe files in them.

The issue causing this problem has been resolved as of Beta 2.04. Closing this thread.
